Seven Winds Yoga offers authentic astanga yoga classes in the tradition of Mysore, Southern India, where Marianne returns regularly to study. Most classes are self-practice. After completing a beginners class, those new to astanga can practise alongside experienced practitioners. Seven Winds promotes an openminded, non-dogmatic approach to yoga practice, encouraging students to progress through the series and to work on poses appropriate to their body type and constitution. Ultimately, it is all about deepening in a personal practice so that the yoga itself becomes your inner teacher.

This purpose echoes throughout the ancient tradition:

"By yoga, yoga must be known,
Through yoga, yoga advances.
He who cares for yoga
In yoga rests forever. "

Astanga Yoga

Astanga Yoga is a strong, dynamic practice with profound benefits, both physical and mental. Progress depends upon commitment and perseverance. Daily practice of astanga yoga is the norm. Seven Winds classes are mostly self-practice, the traditional Mysore style. Led classes happen from time to time depending upon the needs of the students. Everyone committed to exploring this incredible path of self transformation is welcome to join.
Beginners courses are held periodically. In a 6 to 8 week term of weekly classes, you will learn the basics of the practice: breath, bandhas and dristi. You will learn the sun salutations, the standing and finishing sequence, and the seated sequence up to navasana or wherever it is appropriate for you to practise. Regular attendance of beginners courses is vital. At the end of the term, you will have a personal practice sequence and be able to attend Mysore-style classes to develop and deepen in your yoga.

Classical Hatha

Classical hatha is a gentle inwards style of asana practice. Though correct alignment of all poses is emphasized, release and surrender are the means. Flexibility increases naturally as both mind and body experience deep relaxation. Classes include basic pranayama and meditation.
The evening Hatha class is suitable for complete beginners. It introduces the basic poses and can serve as preparation for astanga classes for those entirely new to yoga. It is suitable for experienced students wanting a gentler practice. A restorative class, it focuses upon the power of yoga to reduce stress, increase energy, rejuvenate the body and quieten the mind.

On days of the full and new moon, it is advisable not to practise astanga yoga. The planetary energy on these days is most extreme, and rest is traditional. If class falls on a moon day, classes will meet as usual, but the practice will be different. It will explore some aspect of yoga that complements the astanga practice.
