Seven Winds yoga classes follow in the tradition of Krishnamacharya, guru of Sri K Pattabhi Jois, BKS Iyengar and others. Krishnamacharya developed the vinyasa krama style of practice, where smooth ujjayi breath links body and mind through beautiful, flowing sequences of yoga postures. The combination of bandhas (internal locks), breath, and dristi (gaze) transforms physical practice into a moving meditation. The well-known sequences of Astanga Yoga developed out of this tradition, but other variations and sequences belong to it as well.
Seven Winds offers Mysore style self-practice classes, led astanga, and beginners hatha flow. All classes are two hours and numbers are small, so you will receive lots of individual attention, physical adjustments, and help in developing the personal practice that is right for you! Ultimately, the yoga itself becomes your teacher. This purpose echoes throughout the ancient tradition:

"By yoga, yoga must be known,
Through yoga, yoga advances.
He who cares for yoga
In yoga rests forever. "

Self-Practice

In self-practice classes, everyone works individually, following the rhythm of the breath and moving through postures at their own pace. Committed astanga practitioners will be taught the traditional sequences accurately and encouraged to experience the full power of this practice, within the limits of safety. Regular practice brings about profound benefits, both physical and mental.
Even though I honour the astanga sequences and practised them strictly for many years, I also encourage openness to the voice of the inner guru, an experimental, dynamic and intuitive style of practising that adapts to differences in constitutions. In self-practice classes, experienced students are welcome to practise other sequences and variations. They will receive adjustments the same as the astanga practitioners, as well as guidance in developing a practice most in tune with their nature.

Basic Hatha Flow

Hatha flow classes teach the fundamentals of yoga and many basic flow sequences. Correct alignment of all poses is emphasized, though right from the beginning, students learn simple sequences that they can practise on their own. Flexibility increases naturally as both mind and body experience deep relaxation through the synchronization of breath and movement.
This class is suitable not just for complete beginners but also more experienced students interested in learning different sequences, many of which can be taken well beyond the basic level. Basic pranayama and meditation are also included, as well as restorative poses. This class focuses upon the power of yoga to reduce stress, increase energy, rejuvenate the body and quieten the mind.

Led Astanga

In this class, you will learn the traditional astanga primary series, up to navasana, including basic backbends and finishing sequence. A dynamic flowing class, led astanga is suitable for those new to astanga but with some experience of yoga or those who prefer the pace of a led class. You will receive guidance in modifying the series to suit your particular constitution and assistance in working through physical and energetic blocks.

On days of the full and new moon, it is advisable not to practise astanga yoga. The planetary energy on these days is most extreme, and rest is traditional. If class falls on a moon day, classes will meet as usual, but the practice will be different. It will explore some aspect of yoga that complements the astanga practice.
