Famous (and infamous) people have fascinating astrological charts. Planetary forces line up in such a way to make them strong, for good or for ill. But even though these charts often lack the ambiguity sometimes seen in the charts of ordinary people, they too are not without nuance. Jyotish, which looks deeply at human character, Read More…
My yoga practice has taken a beating this past year. Yoga on the road is a challenging thing. In one place my floor is a slab of rough concrete, so I hold my headstand for less than a minute or sometimes forgo it all together. In another place my room is so cluttered with furniture Read More…
According to the South Indian calendar, on 15 July we entered Dakshinayana, the dark half of the year. You probably did not feel it. I sure didn’t. It was the height of summer here in California, many days up to 40°C or more, with balmy evenings and the scent of jasmine wafting heavenly on the Read More…
“Nice asana sequences, but I wouldn’t want to practise that way every day.” When I once heard someone refer to the Primary and Intermediate Series of Ashtanga Yoga like that I was shocked. How do you know that your yoga practice is working? A teacher of mine once replied to this question perfectly. The answer has nothing to do with being able to bind in Marichyasana D or come up from drop backs. In fact, it is not a surprise that it has nothing to do with linear Read More…
It is an interesting fact that the deeper we go in our practice, the more the minute details of our ego identity surface with humbling clarity. Nothing like being alone for a long stretch of time either to notice the patterns repeating, and to stop and observe the parts, as if under a microscope. I’m Read More…
Here it goes . . . the “agony and ecstasy” of yoga after hip replacement. For the first couple of months post-op, I tracked my progress in a journal. What follows is my personal experience. Yours will certainly be different. Each body has its unique quirks. But for everyone most definitely, the flexibility and strength Read More…
When I was in my mid-twenties, someone said to me once, “You’re really talented in cooking and sewing.” I didn’t like it. Yes, I knew it was meant to be a compliment. In the moment, I responded with an appropriately polite thank you. But inside it triggered a whole chain of negative emotional reactions . . Read More…
